Harry Swagart was born in Evanston, Illinois on April 27, 1945. He grew up in the Washington, D.C., area, where he attended the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating in 1963. Harry graduated from Duke University in May 1971 with an A.B. degree in Economics. Between his junior and senior years at Duke, he spent two and one-half years in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in May 1970. In May 1976, Harry graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was managing editor of the South Carolina Law Review, a member of the Moot Court Bar, a legal writing instructor, and the author of two published law review articles.

From law school, Harry joined the Washington, D.C., law firm of Howrey & Simon, where he was employed as an associate from 1976 through 1978. Howrey & Simon was and still is widely respected as one of the leading antitrust litigation law firms in the nation, listing among its major clients Exxon, Mobil, Shell Oil Company, General Mills, H.J. Heinz Company, Anheuser Busch, and other Fortune 500 companies. During the relatively short time Harry was employed by Howrey & Simon, he participated extensively in its very sophisticated complex litigation practice, which in turn brought him into close contact with some of the country's leading experts in industrial organization economics, accounting, corporate finance, statistics, econometrics, and marketing theory. Harry's background in economics together with his exposure to complex litigation during his years at Howrey & Simon provide him a firm foundation for dealing with the complex economic and financial issues which have been the focus of his practice throughout his legal career.

Harry left Howrey & Simon in 1978 after learning that his wife was pregnant, based upon a decision they made to raise their family in South Carolina. Upon returning to Columbia, Harry served for a year as Assistant Dean and Lecturer in Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law. He returned to private practice in 1980 and has worked continuously in the practice areas, which are described later in this website.
